A MODERN PARABLE

THE CHOICE IS YOURS

A spaceship was hurtling through space on an adventure never before experienced by humankind. Almost by accident, it had been discovered that there was a planet that contained intelligent life forms in an unknown galaxy. A man named Albert had been chosen from millions of applicants to be the sole occupant on the journey, which was about to arrive at the mysterious planet.

Little was known about the planet’s intelligent life forms except for the puzzling reality that the entire population was separated into four distinctive skin colors of Green, Blue, Purple, and a Pink skin that was striped with colors of yellow and magenta. Earth scientists labeled the population on the newly discovered planet as inhabs.

Albert had been provided with two forms of unique technology that would permit him to observe the planet’s life forms without being observed. The first device enabled him to observe and even listen in on the creature’s interactions, almost as if he were inside the room. The second device, almost more unbelievable, allowed him to comprehend their group biographies and observe their political decision-making as they chose how to relate to each other as four distinct groups.

He quickly grasped the events that had led them to their current condition. Apparently, several hundred years earlier, the Pink inhabs had discovered a vast continent on their planet filled with numerous provisions of precious minerals and rich soil capable of producing abundant crops. Scattered across this vast landscape were some purple residents who lived in small villages and basically lived off the land, hunting some animals and gathering wild fruit that grew in abundance. At first the pink inhabs had tried to use the purple residents as cheap labor but they resisted. They had too much pride and a sense of independence as the the original inhabitants.

On another side of the planet were some Green inhabs. The Green inhabs were not by nature inclined towards military confrontation. However, the more powerful among them were afflicted by greed and found it quite profitable to gather up some of their weaker neighbors and sell them to the purple sea-merchants.

The purple sea merchants found a ready market among the Pink residents who were willing to buy the green inhabs as cheap labor to exploit their new land’s wealth. However, there was a question to be resolved. It seems that many of the pink residents practiced a faith that had emerged out of a small nation called Ezion and was transformed into a movement they called Krisumons. They had been so enthusiastic about convincing others about their faith that they multiplied and did transcend many of the barriers of separation.

However, in addition to their Krisomite faith, they were influenced by the God Mammon. They saw the great economic benefit in purchasing the Green inhabs cheaply and since they were purchased as property, the only expense was to feed and shelter them.

Many raised a concern that the invitation to join together as Krisummonites might infect the thinking of the Green laborites. What if they concluded that as baptized Krisomites, they too deserved to be free and treated with dignity.

Several respected theologians from the Blue population searched their holy literature seeking an answer to the problem. Part of the answer was to make clear that the Blue population, as evidenced by their wealth, power, legislation, and unique religious faith, had clearly been especially blessed by God. Based on such evidence, they concluded that they were slightly superior to the other colors of the rainbow even as they were called to respond with compassion for their needs. One example of that compassion was creating special balconies from which the lesser population could gaze upon their superiors while they joined with them to worship the one true God.

As Albert read further into their history, he learned that a sense of justice had been implanted in some of the Blue Inhab’s souls.  They even found that when the pink residents were challenged as to the hypocrisy of their beliefs, their yellow and magenta stripes began to glow.

Eventually, part of their practice of their faith led to the end of slavery. However, the assumption of a natural difference in value and wealth continued to be expressed by the Blue inhabs. Those assumptions led to restricted housing, educational institutions, businesses, and health opportunities for the Green population, leaving them on average to have about a tenth of the wealth of their pink counterparts..

There were Blue Inhabs who objected to and even denied that such differences existed. Some joined protest movements to overturn the more restrictive and discriminatory laws. The majority, however, while wagging their fingers in judgment, still quietly accepted the benefits that came their way. When archaeologists even provided evidence that Jesus himself was likely to have been born as a dark-skinned baby, they just saw it as another example of his humility. He had joined a lesser quality of the human race in order to lift them up to a higher quality.

Albert reported his observations to Earth, and his advisors encouraged him not to interfere.  What advice do we on earth have to offer them, they asked? All they really need to do is learn to listen to each other and invite all of the other races to teach them the value of a rich diversity.

Dejavu all over again, thought Albert.
